The Old Chapel Textile Centre in Newbury, home of the National Needlework Archive, offer courses, workshops and exhibitions in sewing, haberdashery,  needlecraft, textiles, embroidery, cross stitch, quilting and textile art. Our shop carries an extensive range of all needlework and sewing products including fabric, threads, wool, zips and patterns. We have an archive of historic textiles and patterns and are home to The Country Wife mural.

BASIC SEWING TECHNIQUES

This series of 4 classes takes you through a set of machine sewing skills without having to worry about spoiling a project.  You will produce a portfolio of samples for future reference.  Skills covered include: several types of zip insertions, seams, buttonholes, and tips to give your work a professional finish.

Whether you have just bought an overlocker, or had one for years but never got to grips with it, these 2 sessions are for you.  Bring your overlocker along to find out how it works, what it will do, and how to get the most out of it.

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS'

Use a photograph of your house as inspiration to create and stitch an A5 book cover.  You will produce an individual design using pre painted fabrics and adding embellishment with acrylic paints and stitch.

MAKE A TOTE BAG

Produce a really useful, lined tote bag with handles and fastening to develop your sewing skills.  The project includes pockets, zip, turned handles.  They make great presents - once you get started you will make loads!  Fabrics supplied.

BEGINNERS' SMOCKING

with Sallyann Dunn


In 4 sessions students will learn how to smock, basic smocking stitches and how to pleat fabric ready to smock.  You will aim to make a small sampler of smocking stitches, this sampler can be used as an insert for a book or to make a lavender sachet or simple pin cushion.

‘VINTAGE’ APRON

Make a lovely apron for yourself or as a present.  This apron has a v-neck giving it a vintage feel.  You will be attaching bias binding to finish the neck and arm edges and, if time allows, we will be adding a pocket.

MAKE A BASIC SKIRT

Over the course of 4 sessions, using a standard commercial pattern and your own machine this class guides you through making a straight or A-line skirt with zip, waistband, hem and optional pockets.  Great for anyone with basic skills who wants to start making garments.

MAKE A TAILORED JACKET

The first of the 6 sessions will include making fit adjustments to the pattern you have chosen before cutting out the fabric.  There will be help with interlining, setting in the sleeves, revers, pockets, lining etc.  Tailored jackets require a little more TLC than most projects but are worth it in the end!

Learn, in 2 sessions, how to produce a simple hand spun yarn using one of the earliest known techniques.  With a drop spindle you can learn to create your own yarns for knitting, crochet or weaving.

INTRODUCTION TO KUMIHIMO (Japanese) BRAIDING

Discover the art of creating simple braids using an age old technique on modern equipment.  Once you have learned the basics you will be able to make beautiful lengths of braid for necklaces, bracelets etc.  Just by changing the warp colours you can introduce infinite variations.

FANTASY TREE HOUSE'

UNIQUE ART QUILT FROM START TO FINISH

with Jill Rose Brennan


In 6 full day sessions, Jill will take you through the entire process to make a small, bespoke quilt.  You will start by solidifying your ideas and selecting fabrics and colours.  You will learn quick piecing methods and applique.  The next stage is layering and stretching with wadding and backing.  Finally machine and hand quilting will be covered.  Not only will you complete a quilt, you will also have honed the skills to do this again and again.

WOOL ROVING FAIRIES AND ANGELS

with Sue Howell


In this workshop you will learn the techniques to create enchanting fairies and angels, using wool roving. These involve wrapping and needle felting, and adding wooden beads, pipe cleaners, ribbon, buttons and other embellishments as required. The finished products can be hung on a Christmas tree or on the wall.

Our new programme of one or two day workshops, and weekly classes covers a wide range of topics including sewing, dressmaking, embroidery, smocking, patchwork, quilting, spinning, braiding and more.

We have a full range from traditional crafts, to traditional with a contemporary twist, to pure fantasy!

There is something for all, whether you prefer to take home a finished piece or produce samples to take home to incorporate into your own projects at a later date.

Level 1 - Beginners – suitable for those who are just starting out and wanting to build confidence in basic skills.

Level 2 - Intermediate – suitable for those with some experience looking to extend their basic skills.

Level 3 - Advanced – suitable for those with experience. Learn how to apply your skills and be creative.

A minimum of 4 students is required in order for a workshop or class to run.

There is a 10% discount on all workshops and classes for members of the OCTC.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.  Please bring a sandwich lunch if you are attending for a full day.
