The Old Chapel Textile Centre in Newbury, home of the National Needlework Archive, offer courses, workshops and exhibitions in sewing, haberdashery,  needlecraft, textiles, embroidery, cross stitch, quilting and textile art. Our shop carries an extensive range of all needlework and sewing products including fabric, threads, wool, zips and patterns. We have an archive of historic textiles and patterns and are home to The Country Wife mural.

MAKE A TOTE BAG

Produce a really useful, lined tote bag with handles and fastening to develop your sewing skills.  The project includes pockets, zip, turned handles.  They make great presents - once you get started you will make loads!  Fabrics supplied.

KNOW YOUR SEWING MACHINE

Learn how to use all the features of your machine so you can be confident in your sewing.  Includes: threading correctly, tension setting, use of feet etc.

VINTAGE APRON

Make a lovely apron for yourself or as a present.  This apron has a v-neck giving it a vintage feel.  You will be attaching bias binding to finish the neck and arm edges and, if time allows, we will be adding a pocket.

BEGINNERS’ SMOCKING

with Sallyann Dunn


In 4 sessions students will learn how to smock, basic smocking stitches and how to pleat fabric ready to smock.  You will aim to make a small sampler of smocking stitches, this sampler can be used as an insert for a book or to make a lavender sachet or simple pin cushion.

Create a unique drawstring bag.  You will be shown how to use an electric sewing machine.  You will learn short cuts to help speed things along and there may be time for an extra challenge!

BASIC SEWING TECHNIQUES

This series of 4 classes takes you through a set of machine sewing skills without having to worry about spoiling a project.  You will produce a portfolio of samples for future reference.  Skills covered include: several types of zip insertions, seams, buttonholes, and tips to give your work a professional finish.

FUN WITH A JELLY ROLL

Perfect for building up your patchwork skills or for someone with a short amount of time.  Start with a jelly roll and make a lap quilt or something bigger if you are feeling brave!

Over the course of 4 sessions, using a standard commercial pattern and your own machine, this class guides you through making a straight or A-line skirt with zip, waistband, hem and optional pockets.  Great for anyone with basic skills who wants to start making garments.

INTERMEDIATE SMOCKING

with Sallyann Dunn


In these 4 sessions students will learn how to smock using more intricate stitches.  You will also have the opportunity to smock with different threads and compare the different effects.  You will aim to make a piece of smocking which can be incorporated into a cushion or a framed sampler.

MAKE A TAILORED JACKET

with Debbie Chubb


The first of the 6 sessions will include making fit adjustments to the pattern you have chosen before cutting out the fabric. There will be help with interlining, setting in the sleeves, revers, pockets, lining etc. Tailored jackets require a little more TLC than most projects but are worth it in the end!








Please note that workshops are subject to cancellation if the minimum number of students is not reached.

CRAFT PARTIES  A great idea for birthdays or hen parties. £35 per person for 2 hours; includes tea & cake and all materials. Minimum 6 people.

Our programme of workshops, and weekly classes covers a wide range of topics including sewing, dressmaking, embroidery, smocking, patchwork, quilting, and more.

There is something for everyone, whether you prefer to take home a finished piece or produce samples to incorporate into your own projects at a later date.



Level 1 - Beginners – suitable for those who are just starting out and wanting to build confidence in basic skills.

Level 2 - Intermediate – suitable for those with some experience looking to extend their basic skills.

Level 3 - Advanced – suitable for those with experience. Learn how to apply your skills and be creative.

A minimum of 4 students is required in order for a workshop or class to run.

There is a 10% discount on all workshops and classes for members of the OCTC.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.  Please bring a sandwich lunch if you are attending for a full day.
